Myles Illness -IPF

Created by Helen 3 years ago

Myles was diagnosed with Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis (IPF) in 2016.  Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is a type of lung disease that results in scarring (fibrosis) of the lungs for an unknown reason. Over time, the scarring gets worse and it becomes hard to take in a deep breath and the lungs cannot take in enough oxygen.

It wasnt until early 2019 that his condition really started to affect him.  It was at this time that he needed oxygen for most of his waking hours.  He was started to struggle with walking at a normal pace and used an electric skooter to get about.

In February 2020, he was assessed for a lung transplant at Birmingham hospital.  He was found to be a suitable candidate and put on the transplant list.

Following the first couple of weeks of Covid his condition got worse and he needed oxygen 24/7. He was supplied with oxygen concentrator machines, which were his lifeline.

After a couple of episodes where he struggled to get his breath in July and August  (which were extremely frightening and involved calling for ambulances and a stay in hospital), he had two calls to say a match had been found. We hadnt left the house after the first call on the 1st September, when we were told that the donor lungs were not suitable.  The call on the 4th September was more promising, we arrived in Birmingham and Myles was prepped for theatre.  Unfortunately, our hopes were dashed when again the donor lungs were deemed as non viable.  Unfortunately this was his last chance, as he didn’t receive another call before he passed away in hospital on the 17th September, following another episode.

Only 2% of UK charity medical spend is used for lung conditions, so your donation to this cause will help find a cure for people with Myles condition in the future.

Thank you
